The following is Lindsay Redhead’s Quote du Jour. As you respond to this particular quote, use at least one personal example from your own experience.
The Quote
“A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.” -Harry S. Truman(May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972)
Meaning to Me
This quote to me means that you have to find the positives of difficult situations, or you risk them dragging you down.
Lindsay, I've deducted points for not identifying the context of the quote and telling us a little about Truman. Correct this and I'll give you full credit.
ReplyDeleteThere have been times when I was severley depressed. I noticed that when I felt the worst, that I assumed everything was going to look hopeless forever. When I was able to bounce back and felt my "real" self (optimistic), the bad times seemed almost like a dream --as if they had happened to someone else-- and I assumed that everything would be always be good. I try to strike a balance so that I'm at least somewhat ready for the bad times.
This quote reminds me of a quote I heard from a coach, which went something like, "Hard work beats talent if talent doesn't work hard."
ReplyDeleteI interpreted Lindsay's quote to mean that natural talent is good, but working hard and being persistant (even without natural talent) is better because it is more rewarding and is generally more successful. I know that with school, I'm not naturally that smart. I'm pretty average, but working hard for my good grades is so rewarding. I feel like if I was naturally smart and didn't work hard, I would feel like such a slacker and maybe wouldn't do as well.
To me this quote means that, you can be really skillfull or smart but if you dont have persistence and determination to do what needs to be done it's useless. What does being a genius do if you just sit on the couch all day and mope around. If you are really good at a sport and you quit everytime it gets hard you are accomplishing nothing.
