The following is Emilee Root's Quote du Jour. Please add your comments based on your thoughts and our discussions in class earlier today.

Quote:
“Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” -John Lennon (October 9, 1940- December 8, 1980)

Context
The meaning of this quote is that if you spend your life planning what you are going to do, and never do it your life will be gone with no spontaneity. If you want to do something do it now, don’t put it off.
It is in his song “Beautiful Boy” written to his son Sean Lennon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt3IOdDE5iA

What It Means to Me
I’ve always planned and scheduled things out throughout my life, and from this quote I have learned to look out for the things that are unplanned. The little things that could be passed by sometimes could effect your life the most.

Deacon D’s Questions and Reflections
We live in a culture where time is divided into smaller and smaller increments and more and more “productivity” is expected out of the same number of hours. Do you spend time to “be” and not to “do”? How? How are the two different? What is the value of the “be” time?”
       What does success mean?
What things matter most in life, and how do you go about getting those things?

  1. I love this quote! Recently I have decided to live my life like this. I think you shouldn't let life pass you by, you should live in the present and take everyday like it's your last! For example being a senior, I only having one year left here at Episcopal. I am trying to live and have fun as a senior. Sometimes I feel like we are too pressured to think about our future and to think about where we are going to college and make decisions that will affect the rest of our life! But really we should have fun as seniors and try to make the most of our last few months here! Not just plan for the future and college, but live in the present here and now, and have fun! If we are planning for are futures and the rest of our lives all throughout senior year, we'll be missing out on senior year! But what I ask myself sometimes is how do you not focus on the future, when you think about it, that is all people really think about. Every decision we make usually is based on what will happen.

  2. To me this quote means that you shouldn't try to plan your whole life out, sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Things often times won't work out the way you plan them and that's what life is. Personally I am always trying to predict what will happen next in my life and where i will end up but what i've learned is that i'm never always right. Life will always surprise you so be prepared to be unprepared.

  3. I agree with Duncan on this. Emilee's quote reminds me of not focusing on things that don't matter and to just enjoy the moment. Like I said in class, this also reminds me of the quote "Don't put all your marbles in one basket" because it helps to remember that no matter how much you plan, how much you want something to happen, and how much you try, the end result is never certain. It helps me personally as well because of my personality. I like to plan ahead and this reminds me that sometimes planning ahead isn't always the best option.

  4. I take the quote to mean that if you're too busy doing other things, then life will pass you by. He means that you should sit back and enjoy life because it passes by without you even knowing. I think it's important to be busy because why waste your life being lazy and just sitting around?

  5. Emily's quote is something that I find we can apply in many applications of our life. Someone shouldn't spend time planning so much that they don't enjoy the present. Live in the moment is an expression that we always hear but most of the time don't follow. As most people have learned the hard way, plans often never turn out the ways we hope. If your always happy in the present how can you ever be unhappy in the future?

  6. Bad things happen sometime, but that is just life and you can't let that bring you down. Life also brings good things. There are lots of instances where you are planning something that is going to be awesome but then all these things start coming up and nothing ever turns out exactly like you plan. My dad and I went to Argentina and everything was going well until we were on our way back. A volcano in Chile erupted and the volcanic ash kept us from leaving for two days and I was upset at first because I missed the rest of my family, then I realized that I have been giving the opportunity to stay in this country longer I might as well enjoy it and just live it out. In the end when we finally got to go back we got bumped up all the way to first class.

  7. I think like doesn't happen when you're busy making plans. I believe John Lennon was joking when he said that quote. He knows that living life is when you are not worrying about making plans. If you are just chilling and taking in everything around you then you are truly living. I really like what Sarah said she makes a good point.

  8. This quote to me reminds people that other responsibilities can always get in the way of what you have planned to do. This quote is very helpful because helps with situations that occur often in life. It is important not to take risks and rely on plans that you are not 100% sure about.

  9. I somewhat agree with this quote but not wholly. I think this quote means you shouldn't make plans, because if you're only looking forward to the future you'll miss out on what is happening right now. I agree that you should live in the moment and appreciate what is happening around you, but you shouldn't completely disregard planning for the future. If you stopped planning completely, I don't think you'd ever get anything accomplished, and then where would your life be headed? Never look past what is happening now, but remember, to have a good future you must make some decisions now and plan ahead for what you want your life to look like then.

  10. I think this quote simply means life passes by fast, and it's not plannable, so don't waste it by trying to plan for it. And that the struggles we go through when planning are a part of life and should be appreciated. I do not like to plan things out in fine detail, to me that is unenjoyable and tedious. I am the worst packer for trips as a result, but I don't get anxious when I discover I forgot my toothbrush, I just go buy another one.

  11. I really like the song! To me, this quote means when you put things off, reality is what is really happening, even when you don't quite realize it. Life passes you by..the life you want, is the life you choose. When you're busy planning for other things and not focusing on the present, life will begin to pass you by.
