Anna: Reproductive Technologies and Cloning
From the article "Parenting in the Age of Genetics," I learned that researchers are on track to discovering the gene that could possibly determine homosexuality. The moral issue is that, if manipulable, should parents be allowed to change the gene of their child? One argument is that the parents might want to change the gene so that their child has an "easier" life on earth, free from the controversy and drama found in the homosexual battle for rights. On the other hand, people who are against reproductive technologies argue that we should not be allowed to manipulate the genes of our children because it is unnatural, and could cause problems for the children later in life. I believe that we should not be allowed to manipulate the genes of our children because then, not only could children potentially become very sick from such tampering, most people would probably choose to have children that are "perfect." The problem with this is that parents would put too much pressure on their children to be perfect, and possibly take away the child's freedom.

Wow. Very tough choice for a parent. You might find nothing objectionable in homosexuality and still want your to be free of the social conflict that it can still cause in our culture. But if you are able to take away all of a child's problems before he or she is born, how will they learn to overcome challenges and limitations --the place where true moral character is forged.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I don't think people should be able to manipulate genetics, especially for something that isn't life-endangering like being gay. I understand people may want to do it for disabilities like downs syndrome or polio, but if you start doing that then people will start wanting to change eye and hair color and stuff. People then would be more like robots then individuals, so I don't like the idea of altering genes.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of yall, I do not think parents should be able to change the genes of their babies! I think you are totally right Anna, pretty soon everyone would be doing it and everyone would be "perfect" and eventually the same! And thats no fun at all! I think you are born who you are mean to be!
ReplyDeleteIts upsetting that our society is so intolerant toward homosexuals that parents want to change the genetics of their child out of fear for how the world will treat them. People changing the genetics of homosexuals implies that there is something wrong with them and this is not the impression we need to give off. The issue of parents keeping their children from having terrible diseases like down syndrome and autism is a more reasonable idea then trying to change your child from something thats not a disease. I agree that parents shouldn't change their kids homosexuality genes but I might agree with preventing diseases if I knew more about the topic and the pros and cons of it.
